Propylene Glycol

An organic compound (a diol or double alcohol), it is also known as 1,2-propanediol is a clear, synthetic, colorless, odorless liquid.  Propylene Glycol may exist in air in the vapor form, although It must be heated or briskly shaken to produce a vapor.

Since the molecule contains a chiral carbon atom C2, it exists in either of two optically active forms (dextrorotatory and sinistrorotatory isomers). Industrial Propylene Glycol is a racemic mixture. Pure optical isomers may be prepared by hydration of pure (D) or (L) propylene oxide.

It is a diatomic alcohol that can form mono- and di-ethers and esters being treated with alcohols or acids respectively. Reacting with alkali metals and alkalis to form corresponding salts (glycolates), 1,2-Propylene glycol dehydrates in the presence of acids or alkalis to form dimethyl-1,4-dioxanes (mixture of isomers). Catalytic dehydratation of 1,2-propanediol at 250C results in propionic aldehyde.

It reacts with Propylene Oxide to give the mixture of di-, tri-, tetra- and polypropylene glycols. The yield of products depends on the ratio of reagents and reaction conditions.

Production:
Produced from Propylene Oxide, is secured under different methods by different manufacturers. Some use non-catalytic high-temperature process at 200 C (392 F) to 220 C(428 F), while others use a catalytic method, which proceeds at 150 C(302 F) to 180 C (356 F) in the presence of ion exchange resin or a small amount of sulfuric acid or alkali.

The final products contain 20% 1, 2-propanediol, 1.5% of dipropylene glycol and small amounts of other glycols.

FOR HVAC / ANTIFREEZE
It is often used as an active ingredient in engine coolants and antifreeze for HVAC, offering benefits including:

Low freezing point
The ability to decrease the freezing point of water

Excellent heat transfer properties
A high boiling point, low vapor pressure

Some types of based coolants or anti-freeze can provide engine protection comparable to ethylene glycol-based systems, most notably in aluminum engines.

When most fluids freeze they expand in volume, which can cause pipes or other containment vessels to rupture and when a water-glycol mixture freezes, it retains its flow-ability and does not create added pressure in pipes or vessels. This makes an ideal solution for burst protection in pipe and containment systems.

As an ingredient in the oil dispersant Corexit, used in great quantities during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
As an emulsification agent in Angostura and orange bitters
As a moisturizer in medicines, cosmetics, food, toothpaste, shampoo, mouth wash, hair care and tobacco products.
As a carrier in fragrance oil & as an ingredient in Massage Oils.
To produce polyester compounds.
As a base in deicing solution.
In hand sanitizers, antibacterial lotions, and saline solutions.
In smoke machines to make artificial smoke for use in firefighters' training and theatrical productions.
As a vaporizable base in electronic cigarettes for diluting the nicotine liquid.
As an ingredient, along with wax and gelatin, in the production of paintballs.
As a cooling agent for beer and wine glycol jacketed fermentation tanks.
As a nontoxic antifreeze for winterizing drinking water systems (for example recreational vehicles), and in applications where the used antifreeze eventually will be drained into the soil, water, or a septic system.
As a solvent used in mixing photographic chemicals, such as film developers.
As a working fluid in hydraulic presses.
As a coolant in liquid cooling systems.
As an additive to pipe tobacco to prevent dehydration and as the main ingredient in deodorant sticks.
As an ingredient in UV or black light tattoo ink.
As a lubricant in air conditioning compressors.
As a wetting agent, used to determine drying time in paints and coatings.

Inhibited
(pg) is a clear, colorless liquid with the consistency of syrup.
